How to See the City
Parking is expensive and often difficult to find but there are many ways to get around Chicago without a car. These include taxis, rideshare services, and rental bikes. Downtown Chicago is very walkable. It’s a great way to see the architecture up close, along with the many public art installations scattered throughout the city. Chicago Transit Authority buses and trains make it easy to get to locations outside the city center.

Architecture
Chicago’s is thought to be one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It’s iconic skyline is filled with stunning skyscrapers and architectural marvels. One of the best ways to view the city’s architecture is a boat tour on the Chicago River. Tour operators such as First Lady include an informative tour guide who shares the history of the city, it’s buildings and the famous architects who built them.
Chicago also has more than 50 landmark historic districts that preserve the city’s past. There are a variety of tours available that explore these areas and notable architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright who has several famous buildings in the Chicago area.
Museums
Chicago is home to more than 80 museums. Here are some of most frequently visited:
- The Art Institute of Chicago- 2nd only to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the AIC boasts a significant collection of more than 260,000 artworks.
- Museum of Science and Industry- offers a wide array of interactive exhibits and historical artifacts including a real WWII German submarine.
- Adler Planetarium*- offers a world renown collection of historical instruments and two theatres providing visitors with an immersive experience.
- Shedd Aquarium*- features a Caribbean reef and Oceanarium that houses Beluga whales, sea otters, seals, and white striped dolphins.
- Field Museum*- this natural history museum offers an extensive collection of artifacts and exhibits. It is well known for its dinosaur fossils with SUE the T. rex being it’s most famous inhabitant.
*These last three attractions are all housed on the same museum campus making it easy to visit more than one in a day.
Other Chicago Attractions
- The Bean- located in Millennial Park this sculpture is nicknamed for its shape. The giant stainless steel structure reflects the people moving around it as well as the surrounding skyline.
- Navy Pier- home to the Centennial Ferris Wheel, the Pier offers a variety of activities including entertainment, shopping, and dining.
- Willis Tower Skydeck- the highest observation desk in the U.S. offers great views of the city. If you are feeling brave you can try The Ledge, a glass floored balcony that extends more than four feet off the 103rd
- 360 Chicago Observation Deck- located on the 94th floor of the John Hancock Tower it offers floor to ceiling windows and a 360 degree view of the city. The Tilt Experience allows visitors to lean out over the city at a 30 degree angle.
Music
Best known for blues and jazz, the Chicago club scene offers an eclectic array of music. Live music can be found almost every night of the week. Traditional jazz clubs such as Andy’s Jazz Club offer the opportunity to have dinner while enjoying a show.
Shopping
Chicago is known for its luxury shopping and upscale boutiques. The Magnificent Mile, Chicago’s premier shopping district, offers an unparalleled shopping experience.
Food
Chicago is well known for its deep dish pizza, Chicago style hot dogs, and some of the best steakhouses in the country. Uno’s is considered the original deep dish pizza but there are many other pizzerias offering their own version. Chicago’s international influences are reflected in many of its restaurants such as the 125 year old Berghoff, which celebrates Chicago’s rich German heritage or Il Porcellino which offers classic Italian food and homemade pasta.
Where to stay
Between property rental sites and hotels, there are hundreds of options for where to stay. Hotel Riu Plaza Chicago is a mid-priced hotel that is centrally located and within walking distance of many attractions. It offers a daily breakfast buffet and rooftop bar with beautiful views of the city.
When to Visit
Summer is the most popular time to visit Chicago with its many outdoor festivals, concerts, and events. Spring and summer seasons offer fewer crowds and more pleasant temperatures. The winter months are cold but there is plenty to do both inside and out for those willing to brave the chilly temperatures. No matter what time of year you plan to visit, you should plan to make reservations in advance for any attractions or restaurants on your “must” list.
