How to Find a New Jersey Medicare Agent: Five Questions to Ask

Whether you are new to Medicare or already enrolled in a Medicare plan, there are many reasons to consider working with a local licensed Medicare agent. An agent can help you compare the different coverage options to find the plan that is best for you.

Here are five questions to consider asking an agent to determine if they are the right agent for you:

1. Which insurance carriers do you represent?

An agent who represents a wide selection of local and national insurance carriers can offer more plan options, increasing the likelihood of finding a plan that fits your needs.

2. Do you sell Medicare Advantage plans as well as Medicare Supplement plans?

An agent who sells both is better situated to help a variety of customers. If you don’t know which coverage is right for you, the agent can help you make that decision based on multiple factors. They will do a thorough review of your needs, including which doctors you see, your prescription medications, whether you have any chronic health conditions, how often you travel, and your budget. This will give them the information they need to recommend specific plans. They will educate you on your options and help you make an informed decision.

3. How much experience do you have?

An experienced agent understands all aspects of Medicare coverage in your state. They have experience working with a diverse mix of people and situations. Their extensive knowledge means they can provide the personalized guidance you need to help you find the Medicare plan that is right for you.

4. Can you help me understand what my costs will be before I choose a plan?

Ask the agent if they will help you compare the out of pockets costs associated with the different types of coverage. This includes not just the monthly premium, but deductibles, copays, and coinsurances. If you can’t afford your coverage, ask your agent if they can help you determine if you meet the requirements for state and federal assistance programs that help pay some of these expenses.

5. What if I find I am not happy with my plan choice? Can I make a change?

When you work with an experienced agent, they will help ensure you pick the right plan that aligns with your needs. In most cases you cannot switch plans mid-year unless your circumstances have changed. If this happens, your agent can determine if you qualify for a special enrollment period and help you find and enroll in a different plan.

An experienced Medicare agent is an invaluable resource who can help you with all of your Medicare needs, now and in the future.

Note: Silver&Smart does not endorse any specific Medicare agents and we do not sell any Medicare plans. We simply provide listings of Medicare agents available in your state. Many of these agents offer multiple plans. We have not vetted the agents who have purchased listings on this website, so please interview them, ask questions, and select an agent that best meets your needs. Please contact Medicare.gov, 1-800-MEDICARE, or your local State Health Insurance Program (SHIP) to get information on all your options.
