How to Find a Michigan Medicare Agent: Five Questions to Ask

Whether you are new to Medicare, or are already enrolled, a local, licensed Medicare agent can be a valuable resource for navigating the often confusing complexities of Medicare.

Here are five questions to ask to help you find an agent in your area:

1. What are the benefits of working with you?

There are many plan options to choose from and narrowing down your choices to find which one is best for you can be time consuming and confusing. A local licensed Medicare agent will take into consideration your health conditions, your financial situation and your personal preferences and will recommend a plan that best meets your needs. They will take the time to educate you so you can make an informed decision. They will help you with the enrollment process and be available to answer any questions or concerns.

2. How long have you been selling Medicare?

Experience is an important factor to consider when choosing an agent. An experienced agent has worked with a large number of clients and has encountered a wide variety of situations. They will be familiar with Medicare’s many rules and regulations, which can change every year and can vary from state to state. Their knowledge and expertise will ensure you receive accurate information and the guidance you need to choose the right coverage.

3. What types of Medicare plans do you sell?

Ask the agent if they sell both Medicare Advantage plans and Medicare Supplement plans. Some agents sell both, while others sell only one or the other. Ask which local and national insurance carriers they represent. An agent who represents a broad spectrum of carriers and products is more likely to be able to offer a plan that fits your needs.

4. What should I expect when we meet?

The Medicare agent will need to ask you some questions to help determine which plan is the best choice for you. They will ask you to bring a list of your medications and dosages and a list of your doctors. They will ask how often you travel out of the area and what your budget is in order to find a plan you can afford.

5. What will my Medicare coverage cost and what if I can’t afford it?

The agent will take into account your budget when reviewing plan options. They will help you compare the out of pocket costs associated with each one, including premiums, deductibles, copays, and coinsurance. They can you help determine if you qualify for financial assistance from state or federal programs that help pay some of these expenses.

A Medicare agent will work with you to find the best coverage that meets your needs and is also affordable. They can help you avoid costly errors that result from choosing the wrong plan.

Note: Silver&Smart does not endorse any specific Medicare agents and we do not sell any Medicare plans. We simply provide listings of Medicare agents available in your state. Many of these agents offer multiple plans. We have not vetted the agents who have purchased listings on this website, so please interview them, ask questions, and select an agent that best meets your needs. Please contact Medicare.gov, 1-800-MEDICARE, or your local State Health Insurance Program (SHIP) to get information on all your options.
