How to Find a Massachusetts Medicare Agent: Five Questions to Ask

Whether you are new to Medicare or are already enrolled, you may find your coverage options confusing. How do you know what is the right choice for you? When you work with a local, licensed Medicare agent, you will have an experienced and knowledgeable advisor by your side to help you make the best decision based on your individual needs.

Here are five questions to ask that can help you determine if an agent is right for you:

1. How long have you been selling Medicare?

An experienced agent will be familiar with Medicare’s many rules and regulations. They will be familiar with the local and national insurance carriers who offer plans in your area. They will be able to educate you on your different coverage options and help you make an informed decision. An experienced agent can help you avoid the sometimes costly mistake of choosing the wrong plan or missing important enrollment deadlines which can result in gaps in coverage or late penalties.

2. Do you sell both Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement Plans?

An agent who sells both is better situated to service a variety of clients. If you are interested in a Medicare Supplement plan, you should also ask if they sell Part D prescription drug plans and stand-alone vision and hearing plans. An agent who offers a diverse mix of products is more likely to be able to offer the Medicare coverage that is the right for you.

3. What should I bring when I meet with you?

Your Medicare agent will ask you to come prepared with specific information that is essential to finding the right Medicare plan for you. This includes a list of your medications and dosages, your doctors, and any chronic health conditions you receive treatment for. They will need to know how often you travel out of the area, as well as your budget for any out of pocket expenses such as premiums, deductibles, and copays. They will educate you on your options and will recommend the best plan based on the information you provide.

4. Will you help me enroll?

Whichever coverage option you decide on, your agent should help you fill out the enrollment application and ensure that it is processed without any issues. They should follow up with you to make sure you get your new ID card. Ask your agent if they are available throughout the year to assist with any issues that arise, or to address any questions or concerns you may have.

5. What will this cost me and what if I can't afford it?

Your agent will help you compare the costs of your different coverage options, including your monthly premium and any other out of pocket costs so there are no surprises. If you can’t afford your coverage, they can help you determine if you qualify for any state or federal programs designed to provide financial assistance to those who meet the requirements.

When you work with an experienced professional, you will have peace of mind knowing you made the right decisions about your Medicare coverage.

Note: Silver&Smart does not endorse any specific Medicare agents and we do not sell any Medicare plans. We simply provide listings of Medicare agents available in your state. Many of these agents offer multiple plans. We have not vetted the agents who have purchased listings on this website, so please interview them, ask questions, and select an agent that best meets your needs. Please contact Medicare.gov, 1-800-MEDICARE, or your local State Health Insurance Program (SHIP) to get information on all your options.
