How to Find an Indiana Medicare Agent: Five Questions to Ask

Finding the right Medicare coverage every year can be a confusing and time consuming endeavor. When you work with a local, licensed Medicare agent they can help you narrow down your choices to find the best plan for your individual needs.

Here are five questions to ask to help you find the agent that is right for you:

1. Are you licensed to sell insurance in my state?

The agent you choose to work with should be licensed to sell Medicare in your state. This means they have passed the state licensing exam and have met annual continuing education requirements. This ensures they are up to date on all of Medicare’s rules and regulations which can change every year. Your agent may also be licensed to sell other products such as life insurance and annuities.

2. Which Medicare plans do you sell?

Ask your agent if they sell both Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement plans, as well as Part D prescription drug plans. Your agent might also sell ancillary insurance products such as dental, hearing and vision plans. An agent who represents a variety of products from both local and national insurance carriers will be able to offer you more options, increasing the likelihood of finding a plan well suited to your needs.

3. How much experience do you have?

Medicare benefits, exceptions, and plan availability change every year and can vary from state to state. This can be overwhelming to navigate on your own. An experienced agent will understand the complexities involved. They will have worked with a wide variety of people and circumstances, making them well prepared to assist you in finding the right coverage.

4. What should I bring when we meet?

Your agent should ask you to come to your first meeting prepared with certain information. This includes a list of your doctors, as well as your medications and their dosages. You will be asked about any chronic health conditions and treatments, how often you travel, and what you can afford to pay for your coverage. This will help the agent assess your needs and preferences in order to find the Medicare plan that best matches your individual situation.

5. After I am enrolled, can I contact you anytime with questions?

There are several reasons why you benefit from working an agent who offers customer service throughout the year. They can assist with issues or questions that arise with your current coverage. If your circumstances change mid-year they can determine if you qualify for a special enrollment period and can help you change plans.

When you find the right Medicare agent, they will become a trusted advisor, providing guidance and support over many years.

Note: Silver&Smart does not endorse any specific Medicare agents and we do not sell any Medicare plans. We simply provide listings of Medicare agents available in your state. Many of these agents offer multiple plans. We have not vetted the agents who have purchased listings on this website, so please interview them, ask questions, and select an agent that best meets your needs. Please contact Medicare.gov, 1-800-MEDICARE, or your local State Health Insurance Program (SHIP) to get information on all your options.
