How to Find an Idaho Medicare Agent: Five Questions to Ask

Choosing the right Medicare plan is an important decision. While you don’t have to work with an agent, there are many benefits in doing so. They can help you weigh the pros and cons of your different coverage options to find the plan that is best for you. Their services are offered at no cost to you.

Here are five questions to consider asking an agent before doing business with them:

1. Which insurance carriers and types of plans do you represent?

Ask the agent which type of plans they sell. Do they sell Medicare Advantage plans, Medicare Supplement plans or both? Do they represent a wide selection of local and national insurance carriers? The more plans they offer the more likely you are to find a plan that suits your needs.

2. How much experience do you have?

An experienced agent will understand all aspects of Medicare coverage in your state. They have worked with a wide variety of people and circumstances. Their extensive knowledge means they can provide the individualized guidance you need to help you find the Medicare plan that is right for you.

3. Can you help me understand if Medicare Advantage or Original Medicare is right for me?

Which type of coverage is right for you depends on several factors. When you meet with an agent, they should do a thorough assessment of your needs, including which doctors you see, which prescription medications you take, whether you have any chronic health conditions, your lifestyle such as how often you travel, and your budget. This will give them the information they need to recommend specific plans. They will educate you on your options and help you make an informed decision.

4. What will my total expenses be for the plan I choose?

Your agent should be able to help you compare your out of pockets costs between the different types of coverage. This includes premiums, deductibles, copays, coinsurance and out of pockets maximums for medical services and prescription drugs. They should also include what is not covered. You want to be sure there are no financial surprises with your coverage choice.

5. Can I switch plans if I change my mind?

You agent should explain that In most cases you cannot switch plans mid-year unless your circumstances have changed. If this happens, they can help you determine if you qualify for a special enrollment period.

Working with an experienced and knowledgeable agent will help you avoid the mistake of picking the wrong plan. They will ensure you choose a plan that aligns with your needs.
