How Medicare Covers Testing

Older individuals have a higher risk for severe illness from COVID-19. If you think you might have the novel coronavirus, you should contact your health care provider to see if you should be tested. Here’s how Medicare will cover the test.

Medicare Coverage for COVID-19 Testing

If you’re enrolled in Original Medicare, your lab tests for COVID-19 will typically be covered with no out-of-pocket costs. COVID-19 tests are covered starting February 4, 2020. Medicare Advantage plans may waive cost-sharing for COVID-19 lab tests. Contact your plan provider for details.

To qualify for coverage, the test should be ordered by your doctor or other health care provider. If a stranger calls you offering a test and asking for your Medicare Number, you should hang up without providing your information. This is likely a scammer who is using the pandemic to steal sensitive medical information and commit fraud.

If you think you might need to be tested for COVID-19, contact your health care provider.

Symptoms for COVID-19

People who have COVID-19 may experience a fever along with a cough and shortness of breath. If you have these symptoms, you should contact your health care provider.

Many people experience a mild form of the disease, but some cases are severe, and older adults and people with pre-existing conditions are especially at risk. According to the CDC, you should seek immediate medical attention is you show any emergency warning signs, which may include:

  • Trouble breathing
  • Persistent pain or pressure in the chest
  • New confusion
  • Inability to arouse
  • Bluish lips or face

Medicare Coverage for COVID-19 Treatment

There is currently no vaccine for COVID-19, and treatment will depend on the individual’s symptoms.

For mild cases, or for people who simply need medical advice regarding COVID-19, telemedicine may be appropriate. This can be a good way to stay at home and reduce the spread of the disease. Medicare has temporarily expanded some of its telehealth coverage to help with COVID-19. You can initiate a virtual check-in or use your provider’s online patient portal to get help.

In severe cases, hospitalization may be necessary. Medicare covers medically necessary hospitalization, and it has been announced that this will include hospitalization of individuals who cannot be discharged because they need to be quarantined.

Stay Healthy

You can take steps to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

  • Good hygiene is essential. Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze. You should wash your hands with soap and water frequently. Wash for 20 seconds each time.
  • Disinfect regularly. Pay close attention to areas that are touched frequently – like doorknobs and faucets.
  • Avoid social gatherings. Stay home if possible. If you’re sick, you should only go out when necessary to receive medical care.
