It’s common to think of travel as a chance to have an adventure through an action-packed trip. However, traveling is just as good an opportunity to relax. A change of scenery and stepping away from your responsibilities for a while is great for your mental health — this is even true during retirement. Whether you relax best on the beach, in nature, or even on a city break, the following are some top destinations to consider.
1. Palm Springs, California
There’s no need to leave the country for a relaxing vacation. In fact, a shorter travel time may be just what you need to avoid stress. For this reason, Palm Springs is a great choice. Offering warm weather all year round, it’s an ideal destination for any time of year — although, if you prefer to avoid the heat, it would likely be better as a fall or winter getaway. Activities once you arrive range from golfing and spas to cultural events.
2. Tuscany, Italy
If you do want to go farther afield, you have several options in Europe — but nothing beats Tuscany. As well as spending time admiring beautiful scenes created by the rolling hills, you can visit vineyards and beaches. In addition, plan to spend time in cities like Florence, Pisa, and Siena, which are perfect for lovers of Renaissance architecture and art.
3. Iceland
Another European destination is Iceland. If your idea of relaxation doesn’t involve spending time in freezing temperatures, simply visit during the summer for milder weather. The mountains will still be topped with snow, but you’ll be able to wander through the countryside comfortably — perhaps even on horseback riding an Icelandic horse. If you need to warm up, take a dip in the hot springs. Make sure you also explore the Golden Circle, which has geysers that erupt several times an hour.
4. The Maldives
If remote islands are your idea of the best relaxing vacation, consider the Maldives for your next trip. There are a total of 1,192, of which less than 200 are inhabited, although several others have tourist resorts or are picnic islands. This means there’s a huge amount to explore — every island featuring white sandy beaches, turquoise waters that are ideal for snorkeling, and breathtaking sunsets.
5. Kyoto, Japan
Look no further than Kyoto for a relaxing retreat where you can spend your time visiting ancient temples, shrines, and other sites of cultural importance. Of course, you’ll also enjoy delicious food no matter where you choose to eat.
6. Lake Bled, Slovenia
Located in a quiet resort town, Lake Bled is arguably the most picturesque spot in Slovenia. The small island on the center of the lake with the church makes for the perfect photo opportunity. Take a boat out to the island, stroll along the waterfront, or spend your time taking in the atmosphere in Bled Town, where you’ll find the famous cream cake.
7. Canadian Rockies
Perhaps hiking in national parks sounds relaxing to you. If so, choose the Canadian Rockies for your next trip. You can make the trip as energy intensive as you like — climbing mountains, taking a stroll by the lakesides, or just spending time outdoors to observe the wildlife.
8. The Dead Sea, Jordan
For a trip to the beach with a difference, head to the Dead Sea. The name is actually somewhat of a misnomer because this is a landlocked lake. The high salt content gives the water extra buoyancy, meaning you’ll effortlessly float. Plus, it’s packed with minerals, which are said to have healing properties. During your visit, you may also be able to see desert oases, canyons, and waterfalls.
9. Mykonos, Greece
For an island destination seeped in culture, consider Mykonos. Although it becomes a party island in the summer, it’s more of a relaxing destination the rest of the year. The towns on the island are charming and classically Greek, making this an enjoyable place to walk around and explore at any time of day. You’ll also find countless restaurants serving delicious food (although it’s true that the prices are quite high) as well as both a brewery and winery offering tastings. Most importantly, the beaches are beautiful and not too crowded outside the summer months.
